The lemon-houses are not only a monument to the genius of the Gardesan agriculturist but, as the English writer David H. Lawrence wrote, nearly one hundred years ago, “during the Summer the naked rows of pillars rising out of the green foliage (are) like ruins of temples … they seem like ruins of some great race which once worshipped its gods here”.
